According to Sawstop, LLC, many of the 30,000 annual hand and finger injuries in the United States from table and bench saws could be prevented with a skin-activated safety device. The system detects the electrical capacitance of the human body and stop the blade of a table saw in 5 milliseconds - about 25 times faster than the body can react.
Function Engineering developed a mechanical saw blade brake that stops the blade and, with a transfer of momentum, throws the blade downward. Function also designed the high-speed trigger mechanism and replaceable brake cartridge. The Sawstop system was awarded The Challengers Distinguished Achievement Award at the IWF2000, one of the woodworking industry's highest honors.
