CoreDirector is an intelligent optical networking core switch for telecommuni- cations companies. The unit delivers enormous data capacity in a small rack enclosure. Design challenges included heat dissipation, hot swappability and EMI.
Since EMI requirements do not allow holes larger than .125", Function designed honeycomb ventilation in combination with blowers to dissipate the 5000 watts of heat. The dense concentration of 512 cables entering the unit also created a design challenge, especially when replacing cards. Function designed an easy slide-and-lock approach. Network Magazine awarded this Internet core device "Product of the Year."
